So after the Virginia Tech shootings, I was extremely disappointed with the way the news networks covered it, broadcasting the killer's name, face, and rantings to the world. As if people aren't screwed up enough, the mass media has decided that they should add the incentive of infamy to the list of reasons for a lunatic to commit mass murder. Today, some 20 year old shot up a mall in Omaha and what have CNN, MSNBC, and FOX News done? They put up a large picture of him front and center on their websites. What kind of message does that send? I understand that this is news, but there's no reason to reveal his name and face. It only glorifies an action that society clearly wishes to deter. If networks are smart enough to avoid showing people at sporting events who run onto the field, then shouldn't they use that same strategy when it comes to showing mass murderers? Once again, the desire to increase ratings has trumped common sense.
